UT Knoxville Reaches Milestone in Join the Journey Campaign

Since 2012, more than 96,129 donors have contributed to the Join the Journey campaign. With the generosity and support of the Volunteer family from all 50 states and worldwide, the university has reached the initial $1.1 billion campaign goal.

“We cannot overstate our gratitude to all of the donors who stepped forward to support this university,” says Chip Bryant, vice chancellor of advancement. “Our donors are changing lives with their spirit and loyalty.”

The journey is not over—as the campaign continues through 2020, UT still has areas in need of support. We need to strengthen our capacity for faculty who strive for excellence, merit- and need-based scholarships that attract lifelong learners, and graduate fellowships that propel students into creative research.

The true impact of philanthropic support from alumni and friends can be seen through life-changing educational opportunities for students, support of world-class faculty research, and transformation of campus infrastructure. In the past six years, UT has witnessed significant growth in several areas including:

  • Donor provided annual scholarship awards have soared from $10.9 million to $19.9 million
  • 145 new faculty support endowments have been created from over $44 million in philanthropic support
  • The number of endowments providing funding all across campus has grown from 2,330 to 3,043

The impact of the campaign is reaching every part of the university from academic and student life to facilities and athletics.

These gifts have helped me attend college, have made me feel like I truly belong here, and that I can make a difference.

Michaela Faunce, an accounting and finance major, expresses her gratitude for the private support she’s received. “My scholarship is a big part of the reason I chose to come to UT. I wouldn’t have been able to come here without it. These gifts have helped me attend college, have made me feel like I truly belong here, and that I can make a difference.” says Faunce.

Interim Chancellor Wayne T. Davis says private support is essential to ensuring public universities continue to be places where progress and innovation flourish. “The Join the Journey campaign seeks to elevate the values that make UT a place of excellence. Our success depends on a sustained commitment to improvement as part of our culture.”

As we celebrate, we look to the future with anticipation of how far we can go from here.
